Are Electronic Signatures Valid in Nigeria? What to Check Before You Sign
Many Nigerians now sign agreements on their phones. The big question is whether those signatures will be accepted.
The short answer
Electronic signatures are generally accepted for everyday business documents in Nigeria. The Evidence Act 2011 recognises electronic signatures, and courts and businesses increasingly accept them. Acceptance still depends on the document and the party receiving it.
Documents where you should be more careful
- Wills and some family documents
- Land and property transfers
- Documents that must be witnessed, notarised or filed with a registry
- Anything a bank, court or regulator says must be signed in ink
How to make an e-signature more trustworthy
- Include the date next to your signature.
- Keep the original email or message showing who sent and received the document.
- Make sure both parties have a signed copy.
- Use clear, consistent file names.

This is general information, not legal advice. If a lot of money or a legal right is involved, ask a lawyer about the rules that apply to your document.
